Population problem

Hello,

As I was building my first city, I raised up to 35k archers. I began killing picts, got 100 crests, and built my second city, while continuing to build my first.

Now I'm facing a problem where I barely have enough population to have 4k archers, and I've even upgraded my cottages all 5 of them to level 9. They were all level 7 when I had 35k archers.... At this rate, my maxed out first city is unable to have an army size over 5k it seems. I don't have any wall defense, and the only other units are a few wagons and supply troops. How could I once have 35k archers, and as they died off fighting picts, only be able to have around 5k now??

Please give me some advice towards gaining more population, or lowering population so I can rebuild an army.

Ok, there could be 2 reasons for this.

Questions first

1. What is your population and idle population.

2. How much supplies do you have to train these troops.

Answers:

1. You train your idle population which is your max population minus (your happiness X your max population) minus your workers in the field buildings (farm,sawmill,mine,quary). So if have 5 level 9 cottages then you should have a max pop of 4,500X5=22,500. If you tax the best tax rate of 50% then your happiness is %50 and your available population is 11,250 and archers require 2 population per archer which means you can only train 5,625 and that still doesn't subtract the population you have working in the fields.

2. You may not have the supplies to train as many archers you can see the requirements in the barracks at the bottom of the screen when you try to train any troop scroll it to see more requirements.

BOTH of these things can be seen if you click on the resource bar at the top of your city screen.

I've got plenty of excess resources to build troops

My population says 10800 under my castle production tab
Tax rate 50%
Idle population 110
Population limit 22,500
Happiness 48%

It doesn't appear that I can make any more room for cottages, unless I start destroying Barracks.... I have a lot of them, and one of all other buildings. From what I read, most people go with 5 or 6 cottages and tons of barracks, and have no problem building a massive army.

What can I do to free up populaton to have 60k+ archers? Should I just build them up in my second city and reassign to the first? How do people have such huge number of troops considering what I'm facing here?

Drop the tax rate to zero so that your happiness is 100%. This will allow your population grow to 100% of your population limit and give you 22,500 people to train.

Or just drop it to say 10-20% so you have 80-90% of your population to train.

Your building is correct but your tax rate is pissing off your people and half of them left and you need them to train troops. Most people farm for gold in inactive cities around them.
