I started playing Heirs (the mobile DoA) a couple of weeks ago. Last night, for the first time, I put troops (a few spies) on my wall, and forgot about them since they were expendable. Imagine my surprise when I next opened the app and found that my entire army had been killed -- except for those few spies.
Steps to reproduce:
1. Fill in general, dragon and troops in the same format as the arena and attacks.
2. Tap SELECT for Defend Mode.
3. Wait for someone to attack.
What happens:
Only the troops NOT specified in the wall defense view are defending on the wall.
What should have happened:
Among other things, the custom troops I specified for the wall should have been killed along with the others, rather than being spared.
All kidding aside, you need some user feedback indicating which troops, or how many troops, are defending. A first-time warning should be adequate, since this is a newbie oversight (not having noticed and tapped the SELECT button to the right of the custom troops). It seems bad for your business to discourage first-time defenders with a big loss due to a bit of unfriendliness in the user interface.
Another way to recognize such a mistake is when a user has specified custom troops and chosen Defend Mode in the same visit to the Wall view. I would guess that many (perhaps most) such visits are precisely the mistake I describe above. I'd be surprised if experienced players use Defend Mode (vs. custom defense) much.
That said, I'm impressed by how newbie-friendly Heirs is compared to the Web DoA, which I played years ago. Having Healing Pools available from the start is a huge improvement.
